When you read a tourist website introduction about Caerphilly Borough they sum up this region of Southern Wales up as follows: “Culture, mountains, adventure, heritage, character accommodation, delicious local produce and a warm Welsh welcome. It’s all in Caerphilly and the South Wales valleys”.  This summary is totally apt when it comes to Caerphilly County Borough as it tells you exactly what to expect about the place and the people. Yet, to understand this wonderful part of Wales you have to go there physically and experience it for yourself.

Convenient travel

Caerphilly County is a mere 20 minutes drive from Cardiff, which is the capital city of Wales. Yet this short drive takes you from bustling city life to stunning, wide open spaces that literally seem never-ending. With 80% of the County being countryside, it is understandable that a person gets the feeling of endless open vistas. This of course makes it an amazing place for any outdoors enthusiast to come and spend time and to be as one with nature.

For those that want to move around on muscle power there are countless paths and walking trails that amble across the lush Welsh hills and of course you can discover and explore on horseback, quad bike or cycle if you prefer.  There are of course many outdoors activities for people to participate in, such as clay shooting, archery, canoeing and abseiling.

Caerphilly and indeed all of Wales is steeped in history and the proud and very much alive heritage of the Welsh people is clearly evident in the building and places of interest to be found in Caerphilly. The most well-known landmark is of course Caerphilly Castle, just outside Caerphilly town. This magnificent castle is also the largest castle in all of Wales and one of those ‘must see’ places for all visitors to the county.

The main town in the County is Caerphilly Town with Rhymney, Bargoed, Blackwood, Nelson, New Tredegar, Risca, Ystrad Mynach and Bedwas making up the other towns located in the county. Each of the towns in the borough has its own unique heritage, landmarks and interesting places to visit. The wonderful thing about every part of Caerphilly County is that first of all, you will find something interesting to do and see whether you come for a visit for a day or a month. You will simply keep discovering something new as you travel and visit the towns and villages. An important part of why visitors love coming to the County is the wonderful hospitality that the Welsh people show visitors. There is welcoming warmth when you deal with shopkeepers, merchants, in cafes and restaurants. Basically the local people offer a smile as a standard part of their services to everybody.

Caerphilly has a packed annual events calendar that visitors come from near and far to attend with the Big Cheese Event drawing crowds of over eighty thousand to be part of this yearly celebration. This is but one of the many events where food lovers can indulge their taste buds and people enjoy live entertainment and see some of the best crafts in the country showcased.
